W5W2 - FAIL

one word: fail.  i didn't make it through.  i was fine during the first 8 minute interval.  it wasn't easy but it wasn't awful either.  it just was.  but then i turned the other direction and the 20-30 mph wind that had been at my back was now in my face.  i had to keep pulling hazel which frustrated me beyond belief.  i guess she isn't ready to do more yet.  i will have to start going without her.  she was really huffing hard when we got home.  i don't mind going slower, but i like to determine my speed, not have the dog determine it.  i didn't like having to pull her along.  she kept going 4.6 to 4.8 which was almost the speed i had been walking during the warm up.  really annoyed me.  and then i was tired and there was the wind and blah.  so i stopped.  i stopped at about the 4 min mark, walked a little and then started running again and then stopped a second time.  not really even because i couldn't go on anymore.  i think i was disheartened.  my heart rate didn't seem that high.  i wasn't gasping for breath.  my legs weren't so sore i couldn't go anymore.  i just wanted to stop.  all told, in the second 8 minute interval i probably ran about 5 minutes.  tomorrow i will try again without hazel and see if i can knock out W5W2.  i was very surprised to see my max hr had gotten up to 196.  that is the highest it has ever been.  i didn't feel that out of breath - weird.

Okay I really think FAIL is putting it too harshly. I don't have time to give my full thoughts but I will later this evening. But quickly - yeah the dog makes it much harder, and the wind is difficult. So stop saying fail, go without dog in less wind and I bet you'll be fine.

well, i'm a little sad, but not crushed that i wasn't able to do it. because i think i really could have done it if i had kept with it. it was mental.

See, I don't give myself the option to not do it. Today I got a KILLER cramp/stitch thing in my side. I was thinking - really, this would be a good reason to walk for a bit because this HURTS. But it's just not an option unless I think I am in some kind of pain that might harm. You have to take the option of quitting off the table And then don't run in crazy wind with the dog!!! The cramp thing lasted a good 10 minutes of my run.

i've been a quitter for almost my whole life so there is that whole mindset to conquer. it is very easy for me to give up when things get hard. so what i have to do is remove the obstacles that might hinder me. that's why i don't run on the treadmill - because it adds an element of drudgery that is enough to make me want to stop. that is why i probably won't be able to take hazel with me anymore - because pulling her along is too frustrating. i will keep at it. don't worry.

So when are you trying again?

today. but i can't decide whether to redo W5W2 or just go onto the 20 minute run. thoughts?

If you can promise me you won't whip yourself if you can't do it, I am tempted to say do the 20 minute deal. There is something about getting in the mindset and not stopping. Get really good music and just go. Or even, just go as long as you can, with a goal of 20 minutes. If you run 9 minutes, then awesome! That would be the longest you've run. Ya know?

you mean whip as in flagellate? actually, i was thinking the same thing. i think that is what i will do. if i am able to do it, i can still be on track to finish week 6 this week.

my problem is going slow enough to do it. i know speed doesn't matter, but it is just hard for me to want to continue if i can't run 5 mph. just seems like, what is the point of calling something "running" if you're essentially just walking fast?

You really can't think of speed in those terms. EVERYTHING I read said the BIGGEST MISTAKE beginner runners make it trying to go too fast. If both of your feet come off the ground at some point, you're running. It has nothing to do with speed. What, are you saying I am not running?? I promise you I'm running. ;) The info says prople who try to run too fast get discouraged and give up. Hmm. Maybe they are on to something.

okay i accept that. but then how fast should i target? if i try to just run at what feels comfortable it is like 6mph but when i get tired i slow down. should i do that? just run at what feels comfortable then slow down when i get tired??

6 MPH feels natural? That's 10 minute miles, quite a good clip even for one who's been at it for awhile.

I don't know. I will defer to Mary because I'm a rookie, but I think make yourself run more slowly from the get go.

Oh I totally agree with Clare. The last thing you should do is worry about your pace right now. In fact, I might have said that at one point ... hmm...

Speed will come in time, trust me. Who cares if you run 10 minute, 12 minute or 14 minute miles?

I wouldn't think 6 mph would feel very comfortable after a few mintues, so I definitely think you need to start slowly.
